![]() ![]() I think they got some enjoyment waking us up. Those same birds also make it a habit of sitting on the fence posts behind the tents around dawn and making lots of noise. ![]() We had a bunch of laughing gulls as well as red winged blackbirds hanging out like beggars. Try to keep your campsite cleaned up of food, scraps or garbage. ![]() While relaxing on the beach, dont be surprised to see many small groups of ponies slowly making their way along the surfline. I suggest stopping your vehicle to let them get by you and to just enjoy the view!! At the beach, keep your eyes on the horizon for dolphins and in the surf for sea rays. Many times driving in or out we had to share the road with the ponies. Around 6pm almost daily, there was a small herd of ponies grazing along the road near the parking area of the tent sites. Either way, it'll sure wake you up or cool you off!!! The fire ring area of each campsite has a grill to cook and a metal ring area attached to the front if all you're wanting is a nice little fire to sit around. I suggest useing the showers early morning or when its super hot out because they are cold water only showers. There were 2 showers for our area of tent sites (#66-85). By thursday evening they were starting to get ripe with lots of flys. The chemical toilets were clean & not stinky monday, tuesday & wednesday. Many, many trips if you have a bunch of stuff, which we did for a week long stay. We were at the farthest from the walkway and closest to beach access. The boardwalk to the sites isnt bad, then its a trek thru the sand to your site. The parking area is specific to the campsite you book, meaning no real extra sites for visiting friends. Quite crowded if you head up to the North beach or South beach area which seem to be more public. And what a beach!!!! Absolutely gorgeous!!!! The beaches are pretty deserted along the Ocean side walkin tent areas, so you pretty much have the beach to yourself. Only a dune and 4 wire fence separated us from the beach. Only took on a little bit of water in the tent!! We were at Ocean side walk in site 79. Check in went smoothly and we were thinking we would have to spend the night in the car due to the torrential downpours but ended up getting the tent up when the sun made a brief appearance. The weather said "scattered" thunderstorms. The skies turned to night around noon & the streets of Ocean City were flooding as we made our way to Assateague. We took the Cape May-Lewes ferry across the bay (pretty choppy ride) and followed the coastal hwy into Ocean city on a monday. We camped in the National park, not the State park area. Never have on the beach until Assateague. We were at the farthest from the walkway and closest. Only took on a little bit of water in the tent!!
